Airtel Africa has won two awards at the AfricaCom Awards, which was held recently in South Africa’s Cape Town

Bharti Airtel’s African subsidiary won the award for Best Mobile Money Solution and Best App for Africa for its Airtel Internet Application, stated company officials.

Airtel Money, which is the company’s mobile money solution, has a user base of 5.3mn, compared to 1.8mn that were registered in Q4 2013. The total number of transactions on the platform increased threefold to 131mn in Q4 2014, up from 44mn in the same period last year. Overall, the total number of transactions grew almost four-fold to US$3.3bn compared to US$867mn last year.

Christian de Faria, MD and CEO of Airtel Africa, said, “More than five million customers carry out an average of 1.4mn transactions, demonstrating the company's contribution towards financial accessibility.”

Meanwhile, Airtel Africa’s Internet application Internet.org was awarded for its impact in making the Internet accessible through a set of free basic services, ultimately driving more customers online. Data revenue for the company’s African operations grew 57 per cent, mainly due to a 50.4 per cent increase in the region’s data customers. Mobile data now represents 10 per cent of Africa’s overall revenue compared to 6.6 per cent a year ago, revealed statistics by the company.
