Digital security provider, Gemalto, has been selected as Ghana Immigration Services main contractor and turnkey supplier to design an electronic visa and border management solution

The new initiative will assist cross-border travel and is part of the eGhana project, which aims to generate growth and employment in the country.

Funded by the World Bank, the new border management solution will be designed to create a modern IT infrastructure to work towards the country’s goal for sustainable development, according to the government.

"To maintain Ghana’s economic development, we need an immigration system that can meet the challenges of rapid growth in international travel," said commissioner of Ghana Police Service and director of Ghana Immigration Service, Dr Peter Wiredu.

Amsterdam-based Gemalto will work alongside Avalon Biometrics to set-up border management systems at Ghana’s main ports of arrival, which will feature a computerised system for visa and permit applications processing and issuing.

Wiredu added, "Gemalto has contributed to more than 80 successful government programmes worldwide and has all the required project management skills, reputation and expertise to deliver the country’s new IT infrastructure."
